Japan (Japanese: 日本, Nihon or Nippon, official name (日本国), Nihon-koku or About this soundNippon-koku (help·info)) is an island country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, Japan stretches from the Sea of Japan to the east of China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south.
The kanji characters that make up the Japanese name mean “sun” and “origin”. For this reason, Japan is also known as the “Land of the Rising Sun”. Japan is an archipelago consisting of 6,852 islands in terms of its geographical structure. The largest of these islands, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku, make up 97% of the country and are often referred to as home islands. The country is divided into 47 prefectures in eight regions; Hokkaido is the northernmost province and Okinawa is the southernmost province. Japan is the second most populous island country after Indonesia. Most of the islands are mountainous and some are made up of volcanoes. Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, is a volcano. Japan is the world’s eleventh most populous country in terms of population, with a population of 126 million of which 98.5 percent is Japanese. Greater Tokyo Metropolis, located in Honshu, is the world’s largest metropolitan area with a population of over 30 million, together with the de facto capital Tokyo and the prefectures and cities around it.
Archaeological research shows that people have lived on the Japanese islands since the late Paleolithic era. In recorded history, the name of Japan first appears in Chinese texts from the 1st century. Japan’s history has been shaped by its isolation for many years after being influenced by the outside world.
From the 12th century to 1868, Japan was ruled by successive feudal military shoguns who ruled in the name of the Emperor. Japan entered a long period of isolation in the early 17th century, ending in 1853-54 when the US fleet forced Japan to open up to the West. After almost two decades of internal conflict and insurrection, the Imperial Court regained its political power and established the Empire of Japan in 1868 with the help of several clans from Chōshū and Satsuma. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, victories in the First Sino-Japanese War, Russo-Japanese War, and World War I allowed Japan to expand its empire during a time of increasing militarism. The Second Sino-Japanese War of 1937 expanded in 1941, with the Second World War ending after the Japanese surrender in 1945. Since the adoption of the constitution in 1947, Japan has been governed by a parliamentary monarchy. The head of state is the emperor of Japan, and the head of government is the prime minister. It has an elected parliament.
